I am thinking about getting guinea pigs and l wanna make sure l will be okay with them.
Guinea Pigs r one of the most endearing animals u will ever have the pleasure of coming into contact with. They r timid little creatures with expressive eyes & big plump lips. (Not trying to sound biased here, I've had my fair share of animals in my lifetime.)
First off, Guinea Pigs can not manufacture their own vitamin C. So they need to eat a vit c enhanced pellet that is made with Timothy Hay (not alfalfa unless u r getting babies, or planning on having pregnant sows) along with a regular diet of leafy green veggies. They need unlimited Timothy Hay to keep their digestive tract going. They do best with a companion (another guinea pig of the same gender, preferrably, NOT a rabbit.) They need a lot of cage space (7.5 for one 10.5 for two . guineapigcages.com is a great resource for making a custom inexpensive cage that provides the appropriate space for ur pigs) & a lot of places to hide (at least one hide-away per pig) because they r timid little things. If u have two u do not necessarily need to give them attention 100% of the time since they can keep each other busy but they do become quite accustomed to ur daily routines & expect treats at certain times. My boys r in my dining room, so whenever I walk by them to the kitchen & they hear lettuce bags crinkling they come over to the side of the cage closest to me & start making their little wheeking noises to try & pursude me to give them some!
In short, Guinea Pigs may seem like a lot of work with a lot to think about, but they r great little pets. There is nothing better than waking up in the morning & seeing their cute little faces looking at u & greeting u like you're the best person in the world.
Oh, & by the way, they r not cannabalistic. They r strict herbivores that cannot process human protein or other animal byproducts. (That means no yogurt drops, even though they r sold in the pet stores with guinea pigs on the label!! horrible marketing ploys!)
Also, check ur local animal shelter for guinea pigs to adopt instead of just buying one at petsmart or petco or whatever animal supply chain is around.
Good Luck!!
Guinea pigs are amazing =D
They are easy to look after and they make really cute noises (although a couple of mine scream a lot).
urmm lividav person , i think its really ok fr rabbits and guinea pigs and rabbits to live together i know loads of ppl who keep them together but i suppose you shud only do that if they have been bought up together because other wise they could get freaked out and the rabbit could hurt them hmm .
You should not keep guinea pigs and rabbits together. It is not safe, as the rabbits are bigger and will often end up hurting the guinea pigs.
Guinea pigs like company so you need to get more then one.
Why do not you look them up on wikipedia.org
Pros:
-they are often quite friendly once they learn to know you
-they can live happy lives with a bunny companion (aww)
-they are very cute and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours, personalities
Cons:
-they do not always get along with one another
- they can be VERY timid (especially if they are from the pet store vs. pound or shelter)
- they can make LOTS of noise, constantly and sometimes it is difficult to figure out why lol
Lol guinea pigs are great pets! I currently have two females!!
PROS:
1) They learn to recognize their owners
2) They make the most ADORABLE pets
3) After you've owned them for a while they start to ''show love'' back, unlike hamsters, gerbils etc.
4) Live longer *sometimes a con*
CONS:
1) Their care is a little bit more than a hamster/gerbil,,
2) Require Large Cages
3) Need time out of their cage
Pros - they make nice pets
Cons - they are also canibalistic, i.e. one may eat the other.
No joke, it happened to a friend
There r many pros about owning guinea pigs. They can be amazing friends & hours of entertainment.
So here I goooo:
They require at LEAST 7.5 sq ft of living space, they need to live in groups of 2 or more(this can be a nice thing though). Their feeding is not too complicated, but they do need a wide variety of vegetables everyday, unlimited timothy hay, & a good quality pellet feed; Timothy Based preferably.
They live around 5-7 years so u need to be the owner for the guinea pig is whole life. You need to be 100% positive u r in it for the long haul. Then again, 7 years is not that long of a time so it is very hard when u lose one. You get so attached to the little buggers. Their vet bills can be crazy if they get sick. You need to be sure u can afford the pig. Their cage needs to be changed frequently so it will not smell, & the pigs need daily attention & floor time excersize.
But they r the most loving little things, with huge personality. They can be apart of ur family if u let them. I would suggest 2 guinea pigs for any family that is ready for the commitment.
They r really friendly & will get to know you, & sort of chatter away to u when they see u stuff like that. They love to be handled & petted/combed etc., so u get a lot of touchy feely good times with them lol.
They r easy to feed, happy with guinea pig food & then supplement that with normal stuff like fruit or salad vegetables/carrots, that sort of thing, they LOVE dandelions & will clear ur lawn of them if u get a run for them..and have a lawn ofc lol.
They r great with kids, & make great first pets. They r easy to care for & clean out & stuff like that. They r really sociable & u can share a hutch with a rabbit if u like, so long as it is big enough, & they keep each other company :) They r also a relatively cheap pet to keep with regards feeding costs, bedding costs etc.
On the bad side, they r not the longest living of pets, & obviously u have to clean them out regularly to stop them getting sick.you also need to make very sure u know that u r not housing males & females together, as they breed at an alarming rate given the chance! I can not really think of a lot of bad points, I loved my guinea pigs!
